A sea of islands- Masterpieces from Oceania

Freitag, 21.02.2020 bis Donnerstag, 31.12.2020

Ausstellung, Leiden

A SEA OF ISLANDS will bring visitors face to face with some intriguing and highly aesthetic objects. A great variety of items will be on display – all of them quite exquisite – ranging from canoes several metres long, paddles and ingenious navigation devices to jewellery, statues, barkcloths and ceremonial garments. Each one is a highlight of our own collection or of the collections of international museums like Musée du Quai Branly (Paris, France), the Lindenmuseum (Stuttgart, Germany) and the Auckland Art Gallery (Auckland, New Zealand).

The exhibition will also include contemporary work by artists like Taloi Havini and Yuki Kihara which explores cultural identity, colonisation and encounters between the people of Oceania and Europeans.

One extraordinary work featured in the exhibition will be George Nuku’s large installation ‘Bottled Ocean’. Featuring fantastical sea creatures made entirely of recycled plastic, it expresses both hope and a warning for the future.
